First called Hannibal in 1870 for Mr. Hannibal, an early settler in Webber Township, who lived north of the court house where all the locality bore his name. After Isaac Grant built a store here he headed a committee which had its name changed to honor Henry P. Baldwin, then governor of Michigan, in 1872. Colonel F. Basom became the first postmaster of Baldwin City on December 5, 1872, with the name shortened to Baldwin on May 28, 1875. Given a station on the Pere Marquette Railroad in 1873. The county seat since 1874. Incorporated to a village in 1887.
