The Kalkaska County area has an abundance of natural recreation opportunities. State forest land constitutes a majority of the area. Over 80 inland lakes, and 225 miles of streams and rivers provide activities for fishermen, campers, boaters, and canoeists. The population and labor force of Kalkaska County continues to grow. In 1995, the county population increased 8.88% over 1990. In 1997, the Grand Traverse LMA consisting of Benzie, Kalkaska, Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties employed 19.1% of the labor force in the Goods Producing industry, 68% in the Service Producing industry, and 21.2% in Retail Trade.
